The year is 1141, King Stephen is warring with his cousin Empress Matilda for the throne of England in The Anarchy, the lawless civil war that was to grip the country until 1154. In what became known as the Rout of Winchester, the forces of the imprisoned King fought on the city’s streets to defeat Matilda and return Stephen to the throne.
